    Creating an AI Bot

    Background

Co empowers users of all technical backgrounds to create and share AI bots. You can select any model, include knowledge files, specify instructions, and add bots to your spaces.

This matters for several key reasons:

    • Customization: In addition to using models that power ChatGPT, Claude, and more, users can create bots that are tailored to their specific needs and preferences. Everything from how you want the AI to behave and respond to the data it has access to.
    • Multiplayer: Co let's users chat with multiple bots in shared spaces and channels. That makes it easy to benefit from the unique comparative advantages of different AI models and customizations. It also allows for signficantly more powerful, richer interactions between AIs and humans, as well as between AIs themselves.
    • Sharing: By enabling users to publish their bots, users can learn from each other. There are millions of ways to use AI, and we want to empower users to discover them together.

So let's walk through how to do it!

    Getting Started

Building a bot with Co is simple and powerful. No code required.

    Here's how it works:

    1. Navigate to the Discover page by clicking the button in the left sidebar.

    2. Click the Create an AI button.

    3. Add an avatar (generated or uploaded), name, and description. Select the most relevant category for your bot.

    • If you plan to make your bot public, these details will help others find it!
    1. Choose your Model. The best option depends on the intention of the bot. Hover over the info icon to learn about each choice. Premium badges indicate models that use premium credits. Remember that premium doesn't always mean better - it depends on your specific needs!
    • If uncertain, select Automatic and we'll choose for you. Don't overthink this step! Models constantly evolve, and you can always change your selection later. For more information, check out our model guide.

    • Note: Advanced users can access more configuration options in the Advanced Settings menu. If you're less familiar with LLMs, we recommend keeping the defaults.

    1. Enter your System Instructions. These instructions shape how your AI behaves throughout conversations - think of them as your bot's personality and operating guidelines.
    • Unlike regular messages, system instructions persistently influence your bot's tone, expertise level, problem-solving approach, and more. Well-crafted instructions dramatically improve performance by directing how your bot interprets requests and formats responses.

    • There are lots of ways to make your system instructions effective. But you can also just start with something simple like "You are a helpful assistant" and refine from there. For more difficult or specific tasks, including example questions and answers helps your bot understand your expectations. Experiment freely!

    1. Hobby and Pro subscribers can add Knowledge Files to their bots. These files provide information your bot can reference when answering questions.
    • Use knowledge files to give your bot specialized context or create a bot to interact with a specific document semantically (like conversing with a PDF).

    • Keep in mind there are some limitations: at the moment, we only support PDF, text, and markdown files. Models have file size or length limitations, too. And lastly, longer files will increase response times and can dramatically more credits per request!

    1. Finally, choose your Privacy settings:

      • Public: Everyone can find and add your bot from the Discover page.
      • Private: Your bot won't appear on Discover, but users in shared spaces can still see and interact with it.
    2. Click Create and add your bot to a space to start using it!

    That's it!
